In Catterick Garrison, a remarkable partnership unfolded between Veterans Community Working Party CIC (VCWP), Artist Dr Katayoun Dowlatshah and local volunteers, rejuvenating a once-overlooked war memorial. The determination of these individuals, paired with the creative vision of artist Katayoun Dowlatshahi, transformed a neglected site into a vibrant homage to honor the sacrifices made by service members. This story doesn’t just celebrate the restoration of a memorial; it showcases the power of community and the profound impact art can have on our lives.

Discovering the Forgotten Memorial
While working on a project for North Yorkshire Council, artist Dr Katayoun Dowlatshahi made an astonishing discovery. During a site visit to Coronation Park, she uncovered a hidden brick labyrinth surrounding a neglected plaque dedicated to the Royal British Legion.

This labyrinth, part of a Millennium project, bore the marks of time, slowly vanishing beneath tall grass and weeds. It was a poignant reminder of fallen veterans that had faded into memory. Realising its significance, Dr Katayoun Dowlatshahi felt compelled to take action, leading to the launch of “Operation Labyrinth,” a community initiative dedicated to restoring the memorial. By raising awareness of its existence, she aimed to revitalie not only the labyrinth but also community pride.
Enlisting the Help of Veterans Community Working Party CIC
Understanding the immense task ahead, Dr Katayoun Dowlatshahi sought the help of VCWP. Eager to honor their comrades, many veterans stepped forward. The shared experiences of these individuals infused the project with camaraderie and determination.

In their first group meeting, veterans expressed feelings of enthusiasm and pride. One veteran remarked, “It’s fantastic to be part of something that honors those who served and sacrificed.” Research shows that veterans who engage in community service report a 30% increase in overall well-being. This dynamic was evident as the veterans rallied together to clear debris and uncover the labyrinth, transforming it into a reflection of their collective history.

The Transformation Journey

The restoration efforts unfolded over several days, featuring a blend of hands-on work and heartfelt contributions from community members. Together, they cleared overgrown vegetation and meticulously excavated the labyrinth's bricks, honoring the original design in the process.

Families from Catterick Garrison played a vital role in the project. Children took on lighter tasks, fostering a strong sense of connection and history. Dr Dowlatshahi noted that the diversity of the volunteers bringing unique perspectives and energy to the project.

The team didn't just restore the labyrinth; they included new seating areas for visitors to meditate, reflect, and connect with the memories encapsulated by the memorial. The new seats were made by Military Craftmanship and secured in the re set centre.
A Sense of Wellbeing Through Community Engagement

Dr Katayoun Dowlatshahi shared, “The sense of achievement we’ve built here confirms that art and community are powerful allies.” The project exemplified how engagement and collaboration could lead to emotional healing and community pride, fostering a lasting connection among volunteers.
A Lasting Legacy
The successful revival of the war memorial in Coronation Park transcends mere restoration. It symbolises perseverance, respect, and the strength of community resilience. As veterans and volunteers united to breathe life back into this memorial, they forged a legacy that will endure for generations.
Through endeavors like Operation Labyrinth, we recognise the extraordinary power of collaboration and creativity. They serve as a reminder of the importance of honoring those who served and exploring new ways to engage with our communities meaningfully.

In this revival, a forgotten labyrinth found its voice, echoing the stories of military personnel who bravely fought for our freedoms. May this inspire other towns and neighborhoods to uncover, restore, and celebrate their own hidden histories.

Art, community, and remembrance can create spaces that resonate with emotional depth and connection. Together, we can continue to revive the past and ensure that these stories remain alive for future generations.
